*HEV light is the lower portion of the visible light spectrum, generally considered to be from 390mn to 530mn, UV light is 290mn to 380mn and is not visible to the human eye. HEV light damage is believed to be cumulative, appearing later in life in the form of macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is a condition of the retina that causes a loss of fine detail in vision. This is a chronic condition without cure. Protecting the eyes from near-UV light with sunglasses that filter HEV light can help to prevent potential problems later. If damage has already occurred, HEV sunglasses can minimize future exposure, lessening added damage. Dark brown lenses will by nature of the color do a better job at filtering out the lower portions of the light spectrum including UV, violet and blue light. Dark gray and green colored lenses will reduce the amount of HEV, however brown and amber colored lenses provide greater protection.
